PatternStream Training

Overview

This 3-day course will teach PatternStream users everything they need to know about publishing their databases to various file formats for print and digital publishing.

Prerequisites

Participants should be experienced with the platform (Mac, Windows, UNIX) that they will be using. Users should be capable of navigating within the system, opening and closing files, creating directories, finding and opening applications, and using the mouse. It is also recommended that users have some knowledge of FrameMaker and databases, although this is not necessary.

Basic Topics

The topics covered on Day One will enable participants to perform the following tasks:

• Run the sample PatternStream files
• Understand database publishing
• Make a connection to the database(s)
• Create and use a basic FrameMaker template
• Create and use a basic PatternStream template (PST file)
• Create and use variables
• Create and use basic queries
• Create and use string templates
• Create and use patterns
• Create and use conditions
• Create and use targets

Advanced Topics

The second and third days of training are designed for PatternStream users who have been using the tool and are ready to create and maintain templates for complex documents.

Prerequisites

Participants will have the experience to complete all tasks included under the Basic Course Topics. To be fair to other participants and to keep the course on schedule, it is important that users are well-versed in the material covered on Day One of training.

• Create and use a complex PatternStream template (PST file)
• Create and use complex queries
• Create and use complex patterns
• Create and use complex string templates
• Create and use complex conditions
• Create and use complex targets
• Create and use transforms
• Create and use parameter lists
• Create and use arrays
• Create and use calls
• Use custom DLLs or FrameScripts
• Publish using graphics, complex layouts, complex paragraphs and table formats

NOTE: The PatternStream course, while typically 3 days in length, may be extended to 5 days in order to cover more in-depth material for users who may need more time to master the basics or who just want more support in their initial days as PatternStream developers.
